Host: Todd Snitchler, President and CEO, Electric Power Supply Association
Guest: Nathan Hanson, President, LS Power
With electricity demand growing for the first time in years, competitive power suppliers across the country are grappling with how to ensure reliable and affordable power, while also adapting to federal and state decarbonization policies. In this episode of Energy Solutions, Todd Snitchler sits down with Nathan Hanson, President of LS Power Generation, to recap issues that emerged in 2023 and discuss the trends ahead for competitive power markets.
Todd and Nathan analyze the need for firm generation resources to maintain a reliable electric grid, ongoing progress on gas-electric coordination, and what candidates in the 2024 election should prioritize—as well as how voters should think about energy issues when casting ballots later this year.
“Energy is really a necessity of our economy and becoming more important in everything that we do in this country. When we have disruptions in electricity delivery, it causes significant economic dislocations. We really need to state our principles. Everyone is onboard with moving towards a decarbonized grid, but we need to do it in a coherent manner. We cannot get ahead of ourselves. We can’t get over our skis as we’ve seen in areas where, as soon as [they] push decarbonization, they start to get into reliability issues.”Nathan Hanson, President, LS Power Generation
