WASHINGTON, D.C. – Competitive electricity markets are essential to protecting consumers and attracting the investment needed to meet surging U.S. power demand, said the head of the national trade association for competitive power suppliers following today’s hearing held by the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Energy Subcommittee, “Scaling for Growth: Meeting the Demand for Reliable, Affordable Electricity.”

The discussion underscored the historic surge in electricity demand—driven in part by rapid growth in data centers, artificial intelligence (AI), and electrification—and the need for market-driven solutions to ensure a reliable and cost-effective power supply.

Electric Power Supply Association (EPSA) President and CEO Todd Snitchler issued the following statement:

“EPSA commends the Energy Subcommittee for continuing to focus on the challenges of rising electricity demand and electric grid reliability. As was mentioned on numerous occasions during today’s hearing, demand for electricity is predicted to grow at an historic pace, and ensuring the viability of existing generation and attracting investment in new generation is critical.

As EPSA and our member companies have demonstrated for years, appropriately structured competitive wholesale markets can drive innovation and competition and ensure that ratepayers are not exposed to any unnecessary or inefficient investment. Given the uncertainty surrounding how fast demand will grow in the coming decades, it is critical that investment risk be borne by developers and not shouldered by ratepayers.

Competitive markets that accurately value the attributes of existing and new capacity can help regions meet their reliability goals efficiently and transparently, and EPSA appreciates the subcommittee’s ongoing commitment to these issues.”
