Competitive power suppliers provide efficient, reliable electricity at the least cost to Illinoisans. They do so by investing in, building, and maintaining operations at their own economic risk. Competitive power suppliers operate all resources and technologies, including natural gas, coal, wind, solar, hydropower, geothermal, nuclear, biomass, and battery storage. They must innovate in order to compete in the market, benefiting customers through efficient, affordable power.
By the Numbers
- 14,291 MW: EPSA member companies own and operate 14,291 MW of power generation capacity in Illinois – nearly one-third of the state’s 44,250 MW of capacity.
- 6,700 MW: EPSA members own and operate more than 6,700 MW of renewable generation capacity nationwide.
- 1,450 MW: EPSA members have an additional 1,450 MW of natural gas capacity under development in Illinois.
- 29%: Competitive markets have driven a 29% decline in Illinois carbon emissions since 2005 (see chart).
- $3.2 – $4 billion – The 65 million Americans who live in the PJM Interconnection wholesale electricity market, including residents in northern Illinois, see an annual savings of $3.2 – $4 billion thanks to competitive markets and proper planning.

A Closer Look: Jackson Generation in Elwood, IL
J-POWER USA’s Jackson Generation combined-cycle plant is expected to come online 2022, generating between 1,000-1,200 MW of reliable electricity to power more than 1.2 million Illinois homes.
The plant will employ up to 500 craft union workers during construction and up to 35 full-time employees when fully operational.
In addition to emissions savings from reducing coal dependence, the plant will advance renewable resources by providing efficient and flexible support for intermittent wind and solar energy.
